Oulton BSB: Dixon wins Supersport epic

Smiths Triumph’s Jake Dixon grabbed his second Motorpoint British Supersport win of the year on the last lap after an action packed Supersport race.

Yesterday’s race winner Luke Stapleford started from pole position and broke away in the early stages with Gearlink Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin and Pacedays Yamaha’s Kyle Ryde.

However, the championship leader suffered a technical problem at half race distance and his race was brought to an end prematurely.

Ryde and Irwin looked to escape as a result but Team Traction Control’s Andy Reid was able to close in on the leading duo after posting the fastest lap of the race.

The trio were swapping places lap after lap, which allowed Smiths Triumph’s Dixon to close in but with five laps remaining, Dixon was still two seconds adrift of the front three.

However, after Appleyard Macadam’s Harry Hartley had a huge high side cutting short his best ride of the year, the safety car was brought out and Dixon was able to close up on to the rear of Reid.

The safety car pulled in and three laps were left for the podium places to be decided and it was Irwin who made the first move, diving past Ryde on the brakes into Old Hall.

Ryde grabbed back the advantage though almost immediately before Reid made his move for the front.

The tattoo artist lead the pack as they started the final lap with Irwin tucked in behind followed by Ryde and Dixon but this was all to change on the exit of Cascades.

As they exited Cascades the rear wheel of Reid stepped out of line in a huge near high side causing Irwin and Ryde to shut off consequently.

Dixon took full advantage, getting the drive out of Cascades and the inside line in to Island Bend to take the lead for the first time on the last lap.

Both Ryde and Reid tried to dive past the talented teenager in to the final corner of Lodge but he was able to hold on and take his second win of his career.

Ryde managed to drive past Reid across the line to take second and Irwin was forced to settle with fourth place after leading the majority of the race.

Despite his DNF, Stapleford holds on to his championship lead before the 7 week Spring break but by only a point from the rookie, Ryde.

EVO race winner Joe Collier came through in fifth place aboard his Haribo Triumph, his best ride of the year to finish just three quarters of a second behind the eventual race winner.

For the fifth time this year, Gearlink Kawasaki’s Ben Wilson came through in sixth place ahead of Sam Hornsey and Dean Hipwell.

Struggling from a shoulder injury, Appleyard Macadam’s Danny Webb limped home in ninth before Josh Day rounded out the top ten.
