Oulton BSB: Dixon focusing on his own race

Championship runner-up Jake Dixon has revealed he refuses to fixate on Leon Haslam as the Showdown gets underway this weekend, but admits he wouldn’t mind a mistake from the series leader.

After finishing both this morning’s dry first practice and this afternoon’s drenched second practice in the top spot, the RAF Regular and Reserves Kawasaki rider is feeling confident heading into qualifying tomorrow, no matter what the weather decides to do.

But he knows wins won’t be enough to grab the title at the end of the day and although he needs Haslam to strike a bit of misfortune for any chance at top honours this season, he admits he’s not going to be putting too much emphasis on the JG Speedfit man.

“If you try and focus on somebody too much you’ll start to shoot yourself in the foot,” Dixon told Bikesport News. “I’m just going to go out and ride my own race and it’ll all unfold at the end of the day.

“I need some sort of mistakes from Leon to help me – even if I win every race and he finishes second every race I still come up short by 10 points. It’s not over ‘til it’s over, but I’m going to try and go out and do the best job I can do and if it’s good enough it’s good enough. If it’s not, it’s not.”

Dixon finished this morning’s first practice session almost four tenths clear of Haslam, but feels there was still more he could have done in the way of consistency.

But no matter what the Oulton Park ecosystem decides to do on Sunday, he feels confident with his pace.

“In the dry I think I was a bit too erratic. I said to the team I wasn’t riding my best, I was rushing a few things so there are a few things we need to change in the dry

“When we first went out in the wet it didn’t feel quite that good at first, so we came in and changed the shock. Then we went back out and went quickest.

“I felt really good in the rain, but I feel good in every condition. If we can be like that on Sunday, I think we’ll be in a good position.”
