Oulton BSB: Haslam under lap record pace in second session

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam was only 0.1 seconds shy of the outright circuit record at Oulton Park, during the MCE British Superbike second free practice session but was comfortablly under Josh Brookes' race lap record set in 2015.

An impressive 1’34.093 firmly secured his spot at the top of the timing-screens and he left his best lap until last, and was close to a sub-1’34 lap. The first rider to put down some serious times was Luke Mossey, and a 1’34.735 was enough to go P1 with 15 minutes left on the clock and on only his sixth lap.

But Mossey’s reign at the top did not last as his team-mate went under lap record pace with an incredibly quick 1’34.284. But Haslam out did himself and found another two-tenths for a 1’34.093.

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne was half a second off his outright lap record at the Cheshire track and only 0.3s slower than Haslam. The reigning champ lapped at 1’34.330 for second on the sheets.

Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon was outside the top five times, but his last effort propelled his S1000RR up to third, and the Stockport lad set his fastest time of the weekend with a solid 1’34.396, with Mossey completing the top five.

Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha’s Josh Brookes spent the majority of the 45-minute FP2 session in the garage, but when he did venture out he went fourth quickest. The former BSB title holder still holds the lap record at the track, and he was only 0.1 seconds from beating that record this afternoon after a 1’34.596.

Moto Rapido Ducati’s John Hopkins was so close to a sub 1’35 lap, but made big improvements from the earlier FP1 outing to go P6, with Irwin, Ellison, Dixon and O’Halloran in the top ten. Be Wiser Ducati’s Glenn Irwin was the fastest rider in the opening timed session, but he could not make it into the 1’34’s, like he did in FP1, and was a tenth slower this afternoon with a 1’35.158.

RAF Reserves Kawasaki’s Jake Dixon was as high as fourth on the screens with five minutes remaining, but he was bumped down to ninth, with the Honda of O’Halloran going P10. Hickman, Bridewell, Guintoli, Seeley and Ray completed the top 15.
