Oulton BSB: Stapleford grabs red flagged Supersport win

Profile Triumph’s Luke Stapleford claimed his third Motorpoint British Supersport victory of the season after the race was red flagged due to his teammate Sam Hornsey having a major engine blow up with two laps remaining.

The championship leader battled with Gearlink Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin and Smiths Triumph’s Jake Dixon throughout the opening stages but Dixon fell backwards, not able to keep up with the pace of the leading duo.

Dixon was caught and passed by Team Traction Control’s James Rispoli with Kyle Ryde and Ben Wilson queuing up behind them.

The quartet swapped places numerous times with Rispoli at the front with five laps remaining.

The group flicked right into Shell Hairpin before Rispoli high sided in spectacular style at the front of the group. Dixon and Wilson behind were left with nowhere to go and also ended up in the gravel trap as a result.

Rispoli was hit by Dixon but thankfully was declared fit trackside but before he could be given the all clear, Dixon reacted angrily and slapped the American on the back of the head.

Stapleford at the front, meanwhile, was able to open out half a second over Irwin behind him by setting the fastest lap of the weekend.

With two laps remaining, Profile Triumph’s Hornsey further down the field had a major engine blow up midway round Cascades, dropping oil across the track. Consequently, the red flag was brought out.

Stapleford secured his third win of the year and in doing so, extended his championship lead to 21 points, ahead of Irwin in second.

Brands Hatch race winner Kyle Ryde managed to hold off Team Traction Control’s Andy Reid for the final podium place and moved to second in the title chase as a result.

Haribo Triumph’s Joe Collier managed to grab fifth place, his best finish of the year, and the EVO victory.

Luke Hedger came through in sixth place on his Supersport return ahead of Dean Hipwell and the Appleyard Macadam duo of Danny Webb and Harry Hartley.

Rounding out the top ten was Jamie Perrin, who also finished the EVO race in second place.
