Phillip Island MotoGP test: Lowes slashes a second off his best

Gresini Aprilia’s Sam Lowes made some positive steps this afternoon to slash more than a second off his laptime on day two of MotoGP testing at Phillip island.

The Isle of Man resident had a ‘good day’ as he and his team got through a whole host of chassis and geometry settings to end with a 1’30.895, just two seconds off the pace of fastest man Maverick Vinales after using old tyres for a majority of the day.

“We only used two sets of tyres all day but made a good step this afternoon, which is positive for me,” said Lowes, who finished in fifth position in last year’s Moto2 World Championship.

Lowes explained that he did a lot of work on old tyres this afternoon and a little bit on electronics for him to understand the engine brake system, which is something a bit harder for him to get used to.

Along with working on electronics and other little things, Lowes also tested out the new 2017 spec front forks and said that he made a good step in the right direction. “That’s the main bit for today and obviously try and ride the bike the way it should be ridden.”

Tomorrow however will be the day where Lowes will make a push for a little bit more in the morning, before completing one 27-lap race simulation.
