Phillip Island WSBK: Bayliss brushes off crash to take 13th

Three-time World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss brushed off a big crash at Lukey Heights right at the end of today’s World Superbike free practice four before taking 13th place on the grid for two races tomorrow as Tati Mercado was pushed to the back of the grid after suing two qualifying tyres in Superpole one.

The 45-year-old was spat over the highside of his works Aruba Ducati with only four minutes left but walked away uninjured to start qualifying just an hour later. Bayliss says he is now concentrating on his race setup after his first session on qualifying tyres for seven years.

“Today was certainly an improvement over yesterday. I’ve had time to get some good laps in and have felt a lot better on the bike. I did have a crash in the free practice, it was a big highside but I landed ok and was fortunately unhurt,” said the Taree man.

“I was a little disappointed to not have the chance to participate in the shoot-out but I’m still happy because I haven’t used the qualifying tyre for such a long time, and you need time to build confidence with those tyres.

“I’m confident that we’ll be able to make further improvement tomorrow. The high temperatures forecast for tomorrow will definitely be a factor but it’s the same for everyone so we’ll just have to see what we can do…”
