Phillip Island WSBK: Haslam nicks race two by 0.010s

Red Devils Aprilia’s Leon Haslam nicked the second World Superbike race win at Phillip Island from Jonathan Rea by 0.01s after drafting the Kawasaki man out of turn 12 and over the line to take his first win for five years.

In what was a mirror of the first race, won by Rea, the pair were joined by Aruba Ducati’s Chaz Davies for a race-long scrap for the win which also included Michel van der Mark until he crashed out at MG with four laps left.

Haslam and Rea now share the championship lead with a win and a second each, totalling 45 points, and Davies sits in third place with his brace of podiums while 2013 champion Tom Sykes in fourth at one of his weak tracks.

Rea took the holeshot at the beginning of the 22-lapper with Haslam, Davies, van der Mark and Sykes in the mix and Jordi Torres also in contention on the second works-backed RSV4.

Davies made an early move, going under Haslam on the brakes at MG and he was also passed by van der Mark’s Pata Honda on lap five into Doohan’s but the Derbyshire man was straight back under at Stoner.

It took Haslam two more laps to pass Davies for second on the sart/finish straight and he was followed through by van der Mark at Honda while Sykes and Torres began their scrap for fifth place.

On lap eight, Haslam passed Rea and the Honda man followed him into Doohan but van der Mark took the lead into the Southern Loop. Rea found himself in fourth by the time they reached MGas Davies passed him on the brakes.

The top four held station until lap 13 when Rea was back under the Ducati. Haslam re-took the lead at Honda and Rea used his favourite passing place on the way up Lukey Heights to take second.

Van Der Mark was back to fourth on the brakes into Phillip Island while Haslam tried to make a break at the front. Team-mate Torres lost the front going into Doohan on lap 18 and Rea passed Haslam back for the lead at Siberia and Davies followed him through as van der Mark went down.

Davies then grabbed the lead with three laps left, diving under Rea into Doohan but a lap later, Haslam used the power of the Aprilia and a double draft to steal back the lead while Rea stole second.

On the last lap, Rea passed Haslam for top spot in the same place he did in race one, but this time Haslam was ready for him and got a better drive out of the last corner to win by the narrowest of margins.

Sykes stayed in fourth place with reigning champion Sylvain Guintoli in fifth. Nico Terol was sixth on the Althea Ducati in seventh, one place ahead of Randy De Puniet on the Voltcom Suzuki. Leon Camier put the ageing MV Agusta in eighth with Matteo Baiocco and Roman Ramos in tenth.

Alex Lowes didn’t take to the grid as a bike problem saw him start from pitlane. The Voltcom Suzuki man only lasted two laps though and he was forced to retire. Troy Bayliss ran in eighth early on but slipped back to 16th after pitting for tyres.
