Phillip Island WSBK: ‘It was a disaster,’ says Suzuki boss

Voltcom Suzuki boss Paul Denning has branded his team’s performance today at Phillip Island as a disaster and said it is the worst raceday he has ever had as a team manager as they failed to give Alex Lowes the tools to do his job.

Denning believes Lowes was looking down the barrel of two top-five finishes in Australia but after finishing warm-up two seconds off the pace, it began to go downhill and the former British Superbike Champion could only rescue seven points from both races. He had to start the second outing from pitlane due to a technical problem and was forced to retire after a handful of laps.

“The weekend was different than today. Today was a disaster from start to finish. It was the worst raceday I have ever experienced as a team manager in British Superbike, MotoGP or World Superbike in terms of complete disappointment and the balance of what our potential to achieve was against what we actually achieveed, from the very first lap of warm up to Alex’s retirement in race two,” said Denning, speaking at Phillip Island.

“Everything that possibly could have gone wrong for Alex did and as a team we let him down, we didn’t give him the tools for the job, and that’s really hard to take when you had a bike and rider capable of getting great results. The worst we were looking at today was two top fives and to be battling with the fastest guys.

“To come away with virtually nothing is a huge disappointment. The only rays of light were Randy made two extremely braves performances. Considering his condition, he shouldn’t really have been on the bike, especially in race two with seventh place. The potential of the bike looks good, both in testing and here, compared to 2014 but we weren’t able to put it together on raceday. This was how not to do it and in Thailand we will try to do it better.”
