Pirelli launch investigation after Rea, Torres suffer problems

Pirelli WorldSBK chief Giorgio Barbier has given assurances that the firm is doing its utmost to solve problems with its rear compounds after Jordi Torres suffered a puncture on Sunday at Misano and Jonathan Rea said his rear span 180° on its rim.

The Spaniard was forced out of a podium spot in race two just one day after Michael Van Der Mark was spat off his Pata R1 and out of the lead when his rear came off the rim. It adds to Pirelli’s woes which began at Donington when two-time champion and series leader Jonathan Rea’s rear exploded in dramatic fashion at the bottom of Craner Curves. The Irishman had to back off in Sunday’s clash as the crash was playing on his mind.

“I had a big problem with the rear, the tyre span 180° and I had so much vibration. With what’s been going on at Donington and with Van Der Mark, I started thinking too much and instead of pushing where I was fast, I was taking the pace back a bit, and just trying to finish,” said Rea.

Althea BMW’s Torres said after his race he had the same puncture problem that put him out of the first race at Assen.

“I started strong, making the most of being on pole. Having no-one up ahead helped, I could take my lines, get into a rhythm. I ran my race, pushing to the limit, giving 100 per cent all the way. I ran with Melandri for several laps and continued to push but then four laps from the end, I felt some vibration and the rear was sliding around, I realised it was the same issue we had at Assen in race one,” said the Spaniard.

Pirelli will now only take tried and tested tyres to Laguna and not any development versions, assured Pirelli’s Barbier.

“Our goal is to complete the in-depth analysis as quickly as possible in order to clarify the circumstances and causes of this occurrence. Our laboratories in Milan are already at work. Given the complexity of this analysis, a few days will be required to obtain results,” he said.

“In the meantime, until we have clarified and resolved the nature of the problem, we assure you that for the next FIM World Superbike Championship round scheduled to be held in Laguna Seca, we will use solutions that have already been used in the past with complete success.”
