Portimao WorldSBK: Rea maintains status quo despite crash

Reigning WorldSBK champ Jonathan Rea remained at the top of the Portimao free practice timesheets during the second free practice despite taking an early tumble at turn five.

Rea's time from this morning - a lap-record busting 1'41.817 - was enough to keep him at the top as the track temperature soared past 40° at its peak and Marco Melandri was one of only two top-ten riders to improve their times.

The outgoing factory Ducati man came out for his last run with five minutes left to run and jumped into third place with a 1'42.571, which is a three-quarters of a second behind Kawasaki's Rea.

Lorenzo Savadori also improved his pace to a 1'42.969 which nudged Leon Camier's Red Bull Honda down to tenth while Chaz Davies also upped his game but others around him also got faster and the current series runner-up - riding with a broken collarbone - slid down to 15th in the overall times.
