Portimao WSBK: Cluzel victorious in Supersport battle

Jules Cluzel has cut Kenan Sofuoglu's lead in the World Supersport standings after securing a fantastic victory at Portimao this afternoon.

A race which turned this way and that was decided on a last-lap battle to the line, with Cluzel coming out on top ahead of his title rival and championship leader.

Cluzel began the race in fine form, taking proceedings by the scruff of the neck and imposing himself on his opponents but as the race wore on Sofuoglu clawed his way back into contention after something of a muddling start.

In the second half of the race the Turkish rider was in scintillating form but he still couldn't shake off the attentions of Cluzel and with the laps coming down it turned into a shoot-out for the victory.

At the start of the last lap Cluzel made a bold move at turn one to try and regain supremacy but Sofuoglu was able to battle back and hold, however the Frenchman's persistence paid off as he managed to make a move and get it to stick, leaving his rival no time to make amends.

Topping off the podium was PJ Jacobsen - having his first ride on the Core Honda - who held off Britain's Gino Rea. Rea had fought valiantly in the race but Jacobsen was able to hold it together as the flag approached and the Londoner can be happy with another consistent result in Portugal.

Fellow Briton Kyle Smith could only manage a sixth placed finish, just behind Lorenzo Zanetti and the Yorkshireman may be slightly disappointed as he was in the mix for a result for much of the race.
