Portimao WSBK: Double winner Rea allowing title thoughts

Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea has extended his lead in the 2015 World Superbike Championship to a massive and almost unassailable 124 points, and is now allowing himself to think about his first world title.

The Castletown resident took another double victory in Portugal, winning in wet and dry conditions, but he says that thoughts of the crown will not change the way he rides, and he will keep the winning mentality.

“Of course you have to think about the title. The points gap is a lot but I am trying not to change the way I am riding. I am not going to get carried away and start riding around for the championship. I want to race for every race and win,” said Rea, speaking at Portimao.

“Riding around for second wouldn’t do my motivation any good. It’s not easy for sure. I want to make gaps to make it easier on the last laps, that is why I pushed so hard in the middle of the race.”

Rea bounced back from a qualifying crash yesterday and didn’t reveal the extent of how battered and bruised he was - preferring to keep his cards close to his chest and seek assistance from the Clinica Mobile.

“I didn’t talk about the crash too much but I was pretty beaten up. The Clinica gave me a lot of help and we managed it well. I woke up this morning feeling surprisingly good. I was pissed off with myself as it was my mistake, I was getting excited on the bike, more confident and it caught me out. We know now where the limit is.”
