GRT Yamaha’s Lucas Mahias has taken the 2017 WorldSSP Champion at Qatar today despite an heroic ride from Kenan Sofuoglu who grabbed third place in the race riding with three fractures in his pelvis.
Mahias was in a race-long scrap with Jules Cluzel even though he had a 20-point advantage over Sofuoglu and took the win by 0.023s from the PTR Honda man after what initially looked like a dead heat on the television and timing screen.
Sofuoglu stopped to congratulate Mahias on the cooling down lap even though it is painful for the Turk to get on and off his Puccetti Kawasaki - but he now has plenty of time to recover from the Magny-Cours crash which should have ended his season.
Mahias’ team-mate Federico Caricasulo finished in fourth place after succumbing to Sofuoglu’s pace in the closing stages. Ant West rode through the pack to claim fifth.
