Qatar WorldSBK: One-bike rule ‘a disaster’ for Sykes

Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes believes the WorldSBK single-bike rule spoils the show and said it was a ‘disaster’ for him yesterday as a blown engine meant he missed all but the first ten minutes of free practice two in Qatar.

Sykes had improved his laptime from FP1 with his first flying lap but then a fairly spectacular failure saw clouds of smoke erupt from his works ZX-10RR and that was all she wrote for the Huddersfield rider.

“We had a slight technical set-back and what can I say, the one-bike rule is an absolute disaster and a bit of a shame if I am honest because I feel it spoils the show. Watching GPs, it’s nice to see those guys get back to the pits if they have an issue and continue the session,” said Sykes, speaking at the track.

“In WorldSBK, you have a little bit of misfortune and you are penalised for it. It’s a hard one to take especially when you are fighting for the runner-up spot in the championship.”
