Reigning WorldSBK Champion Jonathan Rea is targeting another double win at this weekend’s Assen round to try and stretch his lead over Chaz Davies by more than the current 50 he already enjoys but says he isn’t unbeatable at the Dutch track.

History has Rea with two double wins in the last two seasons, one win and a third in 2014 plus four other wins since 2008 so the factory Kawasaki man’s record is none too shabby but he knows that Davies and the Ducati package are capable of giving him a thin time at the Curcuit Van Drenthe.

“I’m not unbeatable at Assen but it’s true I have had a lot of good results there. If I look back through previous years, it’s always been a bit of a freight train and when it gets down to the last laps, it’s always Chaz that is there,” said Rea, speaking to bikesportnews.com this morning.

“While I have come out on top, he is there, less than a second behind so it’s not like I have dominated. I have got through them and won so there is a lot of work to do. I enjoy the track, I have done a lot of testing there so I know my way around, and history has been very kind to me so it would be nice to keep doing well.

“It is certainly not going to be easy but I feel good on the bike. We are not going there targeting anything less than two race wins.”

Rea is more at home on the 2017 ZX-10RR than team-mate Tom Sykes and believes the package will only get better as chassis and engine upgrades arrive from Japan.

“We have a new more test items to come on both chassis and engine sides. Last year we didn’t have too many upgrades but this year, after a season of learning, the engineers - with my feedback - have a much better idea of how to improve it for me.

“Already this season we have had some small steps from the winter tests and we will receive some more during the season.”
