Redding contemplating Honda chassis switch

British MotoGP star Scott Redding may ask Honda if he can copy works stablemate Marc Marquez and switch to the 2014 RC213V chassis in order to help find a solution to some of his problems.

Up until the Sachsenring round, Redding was struggling to find grip with the aggressive bike and as soon as he got some feel on the front, rear traction went away. A different swingarm in Germany has eased his pain somewhat but he feels he needs to get on to the pace of Cal Crutchlow before he can ask for a major change.

“The new swingarm just recovered the grip a bit more, the old one just spins all day long, spinning out of the corner all the way to the next one and with the new one there is a bit more forgiveness and consistency as it found traction a bit better,” said Redding, speaking to bikesportnews.com at a bunfight organised by sponsor Bennetts.

“The older chassis is not something we have requested for the moment but we could ask. But I am not yet at that level to ask for it. You don’t know for sure what chassis Dani and Cal are on, I am guessing the same as me, so I at least need to be battling with one of them to start asking for stuff.

“My theory is that a small person doesn’t load the bike the same as I do. Marc is a bit bigger and we ride similarly, so maybe the smaller guys aren’t as affected. Maybe last year’s chassis it better but it’s the fact I need to take a step. You can’t be the last of the Hondas and expect stuff.”
