Reeves doubles but Stevens heads Sidecar title stakes

Tim Reeves and Gregory Cluze avenged disappointment in missing out of the World crown as they charged to a winning double in the Hyundai Heavy Industries British Sidecar Championship but Ricky Stevens and Ryan Charlwood are still in the driving seat to retain their crown, 49 points clear of Ben Holland and Lee Watson.

Stevens took the Saturday race victory ahead of Holland and looked to be on course to double that as he made the running in the first of Sunday’s races but he had to contend with the growing threat of former multi World and British title winner Tim Reeves. He had enjoyed the glory in the final round of the World series and carried that form through to the British encounter.

Stevens was driving hard and well, dictating terms at the front ahead of Holland, Chris Walker/Ashley Hawes and John Holden/Stuart Ramsey but Reeves was on the charge through the pack, picking up places and it was no surprise that by half distance he was through into second place.

Going into the final lap, Stevens had the advantage by 0.991secs over Reeves and it was battle on, with Reeves closing in, trying everything he knew to find a way ahead. That chance came on the last corner of the race as Reeves nosed ahead, taking the flag 0.403secs ahead of Stevens. Holland took a distant third from Holden with the newly crowned World Champions Paivarinta/Kainulnen, who had started at the back of the pack, fifth.

Walker took sixth ahead of the Birchall brothers, Ben and Tom, who were underlining their supremacy in British and World trophy 600cc title winning action by again topping that class.

Reeves was quickly off the mark in the final race of the weekend with Stevens in close contention though soon feeling the heat of Paivarinta in a race that developed into a thriller with the three crews battle for supremacy through the ten laps.

It was Reeves who came out on top though by only 0.194secs from Paivarinta with Stevens third and less than a half a second ahead of Holden, Holland and the Birchalls.
