Sepang WSBK: Historic debut win for Hayden

Former MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden rode an almost inch-perfect second World Superbike race in the rain at Sepang today to bag his debut win in the series, passing current king Jonathan Rea on lap one and then managing gap to cross the line ahead of the hard-charging Davide Giugliano with Rea in third place.

Amazingly, it is only Hayden’s fourth world championship-level race win but he looked in control in the tricky conditions which several riders, including Leon Camier, said were too wet in which to ride before the lights went out as the World Supersport race was postponed until later in the day.

Yesterday’s runaway race winner Tom Sykes led away from the lights and into turn one but Rea rode right around the outside of him to take the lead and Hayden, on the ageing Honda Fireblade, followed him as the Huddersfield man looked a little surprised by his team-mate’s bravado.

It then took Hayden another half a lap to size up a move on the reigning champion before moving into the lead, immediately pulling a gap which extended to four seconds by half distance.

Giugliano, Aruba Ducati team-mate Chaz Davies and the Pata Yamaha of Alex Lowes were in the mix early doors for a podium spot, as was wet-weather expert Anthony West, who is standing in for Sylvain Barrier on the Pedercini Kawasaki. West made a nuisance of himself in a dice with Giugliano before the Italian found his rhythm and commenced a charge to the front, following Davies as he picked his way past Sykes.

The Welshman set about chasing down Rea and passed the Kawasaki man with seven left to go, while Giugliano put in a pass on the next lap to claim third place while Sykes was swallowed into the middle of the top ten. Giugliano then set about his team-mate, setting up several moves until he made one stick with five left.

Rea, meanwhile, wasn’t done and set the fastest lap of the race as he clawed his way back up to Davies. Even a mistake into the last turn didn’t make so much of a difference and the Castletown resident claimed back third place with three to go as Alex Lowes trudged back to the pits after crashing out. Rea again extends his championship advantage over Davies to 42 points, or almost two race wins.

West managed to keep his top-five spot, just ahead of Michael Van Der Mark and Alex De Angelis as Sykes eventually crossed the line in eighth place. Leon Camier was closing fast on the Kawasaki man and ran out laps before he could get to Sykes, finishing just a second in arrears.

Markus Reiterberger completed the top ten with Xavi Fores, Josh Brookes, Jordi Torres, Lorenzo Savadori and Josh Hook completing the top 15.
