Silverstone BSB: ‘I believed I could win this year’ – Irwin

It was a day of firsts for Be Wiser Ducati’s Glenn Irwin as he clinched his maiden MCE British Superbike race win of his career at Silverstone, but the Northern Irishman always believed that 2017 would be the year that he would make it onto the top step of the podium.

It was a race full of mixed conditions, after an earlier heavy rain shower meant that parts of the track were dry and other sections were drenched. Irwin had a strong start and made his way up the grid with full wet tyres.

He then had Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha’s Josh Brookes as his target and made a move that stuck to go into the lead. Irwin was happy with his Panigale race package and set his fastest time on his last lap and sailed to his first victory in BSB.

“I always believed I could win my first BSB race this year. It is good to get the first win there is no showdown for us but we can still take part in the races and I will give it as much as I can,” said Irwin at the circuit.

“I knew I made the right choice with the tyres. I felt quite good and I did my moves at the left hairpin and I made a safe move and I thought we would manage the pace and I was out of the seat by the Formula One bit and I was like where did that come from.

“The pace dropped about a second and a half at the end but I had a lot of tyre left and my last lap was my fastest. The package I had underneath me was fantastic. I told my mechanic to lower the bike and they did it and after an engine change today.”
