Silverstone BSB: Podiums the target for Hopkins

Moto Rapido Ducati’s John Hopkins is one happy rider this evening as he put down a super quick 2’04.281 to place his Panigale on P2 for the opening MCE British Superbike race tomorrow at Silverstone.

The former MotoGP rider went two seconds under lap record pace, and he is not feeling too down hearted that his fastest ever Superbike lap record was made redundant today, as now Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes takes over the record-breaking accolade after a 2’03.984.

Hopkins clearly enjoys the historic track and his bike works well, which was evident to see during Q3. He gave it everything and was only 0.3 seconds off the pace of pole-setter Brookes, and that was even after a few mistakes on his quickest lap.

Now he wants to repay his team for all their hard work this season and has a podium finish as his target for the double-header on Sunday.

“It’s a track that I really enjoy and the bike is working really well around here. Up until today I held the Superbike lap record until Josh [Brookes] came along and beat it, and he did an amazing lap,” said Hopkins at the track.

“I gave it everything I had and I spun it up and made a couple of mistakes here and there which cost a bit of time - but that’s what happens when you give it one hundred and ten percent and that’s what I did. I feel really good with the race pace and we have been doing some set-up changes, and now I just want to get away [in the races].

“We have had a bit of bad luck throughout the year when it comes to race-day but hopefully we can repay the team and get this thing on the podium hopefully.”
