Snetterton BSB: Mackenzie closes gap to Supersport title leader

WD40 Kawasaki’s Tarran Mackenzie held off the close attention of Profile Triumph’s Luke Stapleford on the last lap at Snetterton on Sunday to take his second Motorpoint British Supersport win of the season and close the gap to the middleweight championship leader, James Westmoreland.

The wee Scotsman took the holeshot from the start but returning champion Stapleford came diving through on the second lap of the race.

Mackenzie and Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Andy Reid settled in behind Stapleford and were able to move past the World Supersport man after he hit a false neutral into Montreal, running onto the grass and rejoining in eighth.

The front duo then began to pull clear with Mackenzie at the front, even after a massive moment on the exit of Murrays. Reid then eventually took the lead after Mackenzie ran wide at Montreal but the WD40 man fought back a couple of laps later at the end of the Bentley Straight.

Fortunately for the Stauff Connect Academy rider the same lap he retook the lead, as the leading duo headed down the start finish straight, Reid behind him had a huge engine blowout, which ended his race prematurely.

Despite Stapleford making his way back through to second place and closing down Mackenzie at a rapid rate, the reigning champion just ran out of time, with Mackenzie taking the chequered flag 0.217 of a second clear.

FAB-Racing’s Brad Ray came through in third place, capping off his best weekend to date with a debut British Supersport podium.

Championship leader, Came BPT Yamaha’s James Westmoreland, started the race from sixteenth on the grid after crashing out on lap one in the sprint race. The former British Superbike man eventually recovered to seventh place but his championship lead was slashed after a disappointing weekend.

After collecting seventy points in the last three races, Mackenzie has pushed himself into the title frame, heading to Thruxton in a fortnights time just six points adrift of Westmoreland.
