Snetterton BSB: Stapleford cruises to wildcard Supersport win

Profile Triumph’s Luke Stapleford eased his way to Motorpoint British Supersport victory after getting the better of talented teens Ben Currie and Tarran Mackenzie in the opening laps.

WD40 Kawasaki’s Mackenzie took the holeshot from pole position but the big talking point of the opening lap was championship leader James Westmoreland running on at Montreal hairpin and hitting the deck, meaning he would finish without any points.

Gearlink Kawasaki’s Luke Hedger, Ryan Dixon and Matt Paulo also crashed out on the first lap, which forced the safety car to be deployed.

Once the safety car came in, Stapleford needed little time to hit the front of the race. The number one plate holder passed Currie for second before diving past Mackenzie for the lead a lap later.

The World Championship contender then posted fastest lap after fastest lap to open out a three and a half second advantage and eventually take the chequered flag.

Mackenzie took a comfortable second place but CF Motorsport’s Currie came under serious threat for the final podium place.

Both David Allingham and Luke Jones caught the Aussie on the final lap and Jones, having started 22nd on the grid, made his move past Allingham at Agostini’s but overcooked it, collecting Currie as a result.

The pair crashed out dramatically as a result of the collision and Allingham gladly picked up the pieces to take his debut Supersport podium.

FAB Racing’s Bradley Ray had his ride of the season so far to come home in fourth place after getting the better of Appleyard Macadam Yamaha’s Andrew Irwin in the closing stages.

Championship protagonist Andy Reid recovered from 20th on the grid to come across the line in sixth place and consequently reduced Westmoreland’s title lead down to 12 points.

Lee Johnstone took the chequered flag in seventh place but EHA Yamaha’s Ross Twyman was promoted ahead of him after Johnstone overtook under the safety car.

Rounding out the top ten were Came BPT Yamaha’s Joe Francis and Gearlink Kawasaki’s Mason Law.
