Snetterton BSB test: More to come from the R1, says Brookes

Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes marmalised the opposition on the second day of MCE British Superbike testing at Snetterton today, setting the fastest ever lap of the 300 circuit with his last run of 1’46.861 but warned there is still more to come from the still-new R1.

Brookes ended the day with two laps in the 1’46s bracket and 15 in the 1’47s, using both the SC1 and SC2 front tyres and the SC0 option rear, and put in a 1’47.097 with 14 laps on a rear, some four-tenths faster than Byrne’s best.

“I’m pleased with the time. The tyre is looking a lot better than it did yesterday so we have made improvements there. Asode from the final result, and where we ended up, we have also seen some value in the stuff we have tested as we have options now,” said Brookes, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.

“I have tested a lot of stuff and I know what it feels like, I know what it can bring to the package. I ran an SC2 front tyre today and did a 1’47.1 on it, so now I have two tyre options for most occasions now.

“We tried a different shock setting which was good, but not as good as the final run, so we are ticking a lot of boxes. It is a lot of data collecting but there are times when you really have to know what things feel like.

“You can put a shock in, try it, know what the feeling. At a race weekend, you don’t always get to try back-to-back comparisons and eliminate stuff. I suppose now we have a lot of bits and pieces to make the bike even better.

“At the moment, we have ended up with the best of yesterday and today. Not to be greedy but I still think there is more to come. I didn’t put all my best sectors together. There are little areas where the bike isn’t perfect but it is the best combination so far. There are bits out there to get a tenth here and there.”
