Sntterton BSB: Haslam 'was ready' for Brookes attack

Double Snetterton winner Leon Haslam admits he had been ready for Josh Brookes to spring a last lap move – but added that he’d not have been quite so pleased had he not won.

The JG Speedfit Kawasaki man emerged the victor after going elbow-to-elbow with McAMS Yamaha’s Josh Brookes over the finish line in today’s second Bennetts British Superbike Championship race.

Having broken his Snetterton curse when he took the spoils in race one, the second race victory came as his fifth in a row, and he says he was shocked to double up at a track he’s never enjoyed in the past.

“I’m over the moon, I definitely didn’t expect this here,” he said. “I was aiming to get wins and obviously continue the win streak of five in a row, but to do it here at Snetterton as well – I’ve no other words.

“Snetterton has always been one of those I’ve struggled at in the past so to come away with a double win is fantastic. Every year I’ve told my dad I’m going to win here for father’s day and this time I’ve managed to do it for him.

Haslam, who took the lead with two laps to go, revealed he was ready for Brookes’ move before it came, so had his defence prepared.

“I knew Josh was going to have a go, I watched race one back and I saw him do it to Jake so I kind of anticipated it and as soon as he came past I set the exit up which gave me a really good exit on him.

“I was nearly all the way past but as he just came to the left I don’t know if it was arms or handlebars but we just kind of connected, so yeah it was a little bit hairy, but I just managed to stay on the track.

“If I hadn’t won I’d have probably been a bit more p*****d off but yeah, the fact we managed to get the win, I’m happy with that.”
