Sub 17-minute TT lap ‘on the cards’ says McGuinness

Isle of Man TT legend John McGuinness believes that if conditions are right at this year’s event, a sub 17-minute lap is on the cards.

Last year, Bruce Anstey was the first man to lap at 132mph which is 17’06.682, so a little over six seconds needs to be lost in order for that record to go. It equates to an average speed of a little over 133mph.

“It depends which side of the bed Bruce gets out of. I think so, I think so. If everything is perfect on the day. I am away at number one, you’ve got Hillier at two who has done 130mph laps, obviously there’s Michael, then the grey haired miserable one, Rutter, he’s at four, then Bruce, anyone of those guys. Hutchy is fit again, Conor, Dean and the other youngster are all up for it. I just hope no-one catches me,” said McGuinness, speaking at the TT launch last night.

“As Bruce said, his was a fast laps but it was scrappy, his feet were off the pegs, there was a few heart stoppers and if he held it back a little, he would have been knocking on the door of a sub-17m lap. It’s on the cards, we’re all up for it, we’re all in good shape, it’s going to be epic.”
