Thailand WSBK: Debut Supersport win for Wilairot

Local hero Ratthapark Wilairot took victory in today’s Thai World Supersport race when race leader Jules Cluzel was forced to retire his MV Agusta, handing the Core Honda man his first win in the series.

Wilairot, whose brother Ratthapong finished in fifth, was at the sharp end for the whole encounter, moving past Kenan Sofuoglu and PJ Jacobsen after a brief skirmish with Britain’s Kyle Smith and looked set for a podium spot.

But with only a handful of laps to go, Cluzel’s Italian 675cc triple expired and Wilairot found himself in top spot. He kept it all together to cross the line 1.8s ahead of multiple champion Kenan Sofuoglu.

The Turkish Kawasaki man, who became a dad just days ago, had to put a last-ditch move on Jacobsen for second place, sliding up the inside of the New Yorker into the last turn and finishing just 0.03s ahead.

It was not a great day for the Brits. Gino Rea qualified back on the third row and, after a spurt through the field, an error saw him drift back to tenth place while Smith crashed out of a potential podium spot when he caught his engine cases on a kerb and lost the front.
