Thruxton BSB: Brookes quickest in opening session

Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes left it till his final lap to set the fastest time during the opening MCE British Superbike free practice session at Thruxton this morning.

The Bringelly rider pipped PBM Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne to the post, going one tenth quicker than the reigning champ. But Brookes’ best time of a 1’15.659 was still over a second slower than lap record pace.

Be Wiser Kawasaki’s Danny Buchan did initially top the sheets, but his good form was not to last, and he crashed unhurt at Cobb in the dying seconds of FP1, and slipped down to third after a 1’15.923. The trio were the only riders to lap inside the 1’15’s.

At first it was Byrne who set the pace, with half an hour remaining to the opening session followed closely by Honda Racing’s Linfoot and Luke Mossey on the Quattro Kawasaki.

But Team WD-40’s Jack Kennedy put down a super quick, 1’16.550 to go second quickest, demoting Mossey and Linfoot down to third and fourth respectively with ten minutes left.

The Dubliner’s reign in second was only temporary as James Ellison soared ahead, only for Buchan to go even faster with a 1’15.923 lap, to place him at the top of the sheets on his 21st rotation, before his tumble in the gravel.

At the flag JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Ellison went back down to ninth, and Kennedy, Mossey and Linfoot fell out of the top ten. But Anvil Hire TAG Racing’s Richard Cooper had a late resurgence of form and on his final lap, before the flag set a 1’16.027 to go fourth, with James Westmoreland, on the second JG Speedfit ZX-10R completing the top five on the timing-screens.

Moto Rapido Ducati’s substitute rider, John Hopkins had a solid morning onboard the Panigale, and was never outside the top ten times. He ended the 45 minutes of lappery, sixth on the sheets, with a 1’16.124 rotation.

Bennetts Suzuki’s Christian Iddon and RAF Reserves BMW’s Peter Hickman ended the opening free practice eighth and tenth respectively.

PBM Kawasaki’s Stuart Easton is missing from proceedings this weekend due to injuries sustained after a big crash at the last round at Brands Hatch. Ian Hutchinson is riding in place of the crocked Scot, and the multiple Isle of Man TT winner ended FP1 in 20th on the ZX-10R.
