Thruxton BSB: Reid marches to Supersport victory

Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Andy Reid has found his early season form to jump back on top of the box in the Dickies British Supersport championship for the first time since Oulton Park.

He was forced to work hard for the win though, coming under real pressure early in the race from James Westmoreland, Tarran Mackenzie and Bradley Ray.

From the second row of the grid, Mackenzie shot through to lead the race but it wasn’t long before Ray dived past to lead a Supersport race for the first time.

Ray eventually got bullied backwards on the run into the Club Chicane by Westmoreland and Reid, allowing Mackenzie to break clear of the chasing group.

It appeared as if Mackenzie was away with it, his lead growing as large as 1.3 seconds at one stage during the race, but suddenly Reid battled his way past Westmoreland as was able to close and pass Mackenzie within three laps.

With four laps left, he began to pull clear himself, and this time it was enough to stay clear of the group behind to take the chequered flag for the first time since Oulton Park back in May.

Mackenzie and Westmoreland scrapped it out for second place and Westmoreland had the advantage going into the Club Chicane but he ran in too hot and allowed Mackenzie to drag past him to second place.

Westmoreland still managed to hang onto his championship lead, but it’s closed right up, with Mackenzie two points behind the championship leader and Reid now just twelve points adrift.

Ray managed to hold on to take fourth place, narrowly ahead of a resurgent Mason Law and Acumen Industrial Services Triumph’s Luke Jones.

German born Aussie Ben Currie came through in a lonely seventh place, before EHA Racing’s David Allingham raced past at the front of a mammoth battle for eighth place.

Andrew Irwin recovered from his issues in free practice and qualifying to take ninth place and Ross Twyman rounded out the top ten.
