TT 2017: Johnson lucky to escape Hutchy crash aftermath

David Johnson overcame nearly being caught up in Ian Hutchinson’s crash at the 27th milestone to match his seventh place finish from the Superbike race in Friday’s Senior TT, again recording 130mph+ laps on the Norton.

The Australian was running in seventh place in the original start when Hutchinson went down in front of him and his BMW cannoned back into the road, dragging barriers back into the track which Johnson ran over. It broke his footpeg and some swift welding was required by the Norton team in order for him to make the re-start.

“Seeing Hutchy go down in front of me really shit me up and with the recticel barriers flying into the middle of the road, I literally had nowhere to go and ran straight over one of them,” he said speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“It broke the footpeg and I think the team had to go down to the sidecar paddock to get some welding repairs done so I could get back out.”

Setting off at number one once more, Johnson was lying in ninth place at the end of the first lap of the restart after a lap of 129.300mph and was only four tenths of a second behind team-mate and fellow countryman Josh Brookes. It was nip and tuck between the two for the remainder of the race but Johnson had to settle for seventh place once more after a final lap of 130.798mph.

“After a few issues in practice, the bike was perfect again today and with a great pit stop we were well in contention for sixth. I didn’t know it was Josh I was battling with but towards the end of the final lap, I got held up a bit by James Hillier and lost a bit of time.

“Seventh is a good result for the team but I felt it should have been sixth today. But from where we were in practice, to having both bikes in the top ten of both races, I can’t complain.”
