It seems the Manx Government is never far from controversy. First there was the Vision 9 affair. Then the apparent sacking of TV production company North One in favour of a Manx company. And now the disappearing beer tent...

In a major revamp of the paddock area behind the Glencrutchery Road grandstand - much needed it has to be said -  the legendary hostelry is being repositioned. Not much but the news has already got the regulars crying in their beer. Well, one of them.

It will end up a couple of hundred yards towards Bray Hill next to, wait for it, the VIP hospitality lounge. The brewery, Heron and Brearley, are naturally promising better facilities and service for their famous Okells ales but as one sage wisely or cynically opined: "Promises of improvement usually equals deterioration!"

However, beer tent regular Peter Padgett was philosophical: "Nothing stays the same. We'll just have to get someone to order the beer a bit earlier."

In a further twist, the creative brains at the brewery thought it would be appropriate to  call it 'The 38th milestone' but someone advised that consultation might be appropriate. Indeed it was. The boss of the TT Riders' Association, the redoubtable Frances Thorp, reminded them that the TTRA cabin which occupies a space next to the beer tent already had that title and intended to keep it.

The brewery obligingly backed off, Sue, Grabbit and Runne were stood down and TT boss Paul Phillips was quick to assure her that the 38th brand would remain with the TTRA.

The good news is that plans are underway to transform the whole area making it more accessible and with much improved facilities. Swift service at the bar is promised.
