Next year's Qatar MotoGP race will be run at night, Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta has revealed, after he sealed a deal with track bosses and a lighting firm which will have to rig more than 3700 installations.
Ezpeleta confirmed the race is most likely to take place at 11pm on March 9 in order to take advantage of rime-time viewing slots in Europe - particularly Spain and Italy. Some have said the decision is because of the circuit's desolate location and complete lack of spectators.
Musco Lighting has won the contract to square up the massive project which will be "the biggest lighting project for any sports event in the world." Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi and Kenny Roberts did a handful of laps at the track in 2006 under floodlights on roadbikes, but said the project needed more investigation.
There is a test session planned for the end of this month, although no riders or teams have been officially asked to attend.
