Brands BSB: Day boosts Ducati Cup lead as Guiver and Neary win

Rob Guiver and Sean Neary split the Ducati TriOptions Cup wins this weekend while Josh Day boosted his series lead after Guiver crashed in race two.

The reigning champ powered to victory in the first race, but binned it in the second as Neary took his first of the season.

Guiver got a strong start from pole position on Saturday while Host-it.co.uk Racing’s championship leader Day dropped from second to sixth, and while the reigning champ stretched a gap just a few laps in, race chiefs threw the red flags on lap four with rain falling.

They declared the race wet and while the pack all went back out on dry tyres, it was set to be an eight-lap scrap to the flag starting with the original grid.

Neary got the best launch from third on the grid on the restart ahead of Guiver, Wainwright and Day, but it wasn’t long before Guiver made his way back to the front.

By lap three, Day made a move on Neary at Hawthorns and despite Neary striking back out of Stirlings, Day held him off and began hunting down title rival Guiver, but the pack bunched back up on lap five as the safety car was deployed thanks to Paul Slade’s big highside at Clearways.

When the safety car returned to the pits, it was a two-lap sprint to the chequered flag and while Day looked to be eyeing a pass on Guiver, his plot was foiled as he ran wide at Surtees and allowed Neary to power through to second.

Guiver held off both of their advances in the final few corners to snatch the win just 0.134s ahead of Neary, with Day the same distance further back in third.

In the second race, Day got the strongest start as he led a four-rider train away from the line with Neary, Guiver and Atkinson in tow.

Neary got to the front by the end of the first lap, but it wasn't long before Guiver found his way to the front.

And while Day was shuffled back to fourth by lap six, Atkinson crashed out of third at the top of Paddock to make it a three-way fight.

But three dropped to two as race leader Guiver crashed his Hyside Motorcycles machine at Druids just two laps later, leaving SMC Racing's Neary to power to victory almost four seconds clear of Day, while David Shoubridge bagged third.
