Assen WorldSBK: 'It's more fun when you're in the fight' - Lowes

Pata Yamaha's Alex Lowes is having the best opening to a WorldSBK season in his career so far and is able to not just keep four-time champion Jonathan Rea in sight but is having fun scrapping with the Kawasaki man.

Lowes and the R1 have become a consistent podium package in 2019 and this weekend, Lowes returns to Assen where he has had no small measure of success in the past.

Plus, it might be the first race where Alvaro Bautista and the Ducati aren't able to vanish into the sunset.

“I riding as well as I’ve ever ridden and the setup is good on the bike, so I just need to keep challenging for the podium,” Lowes told bikesportnews.com.

“We need to see how close we can get to the Ducati on a couple of different tracks and see if we can fight with them.

“This weekend, Michael is going to be fast, Leon will be as he always goes well there and Jonathan."

Aragon saw Lowes and the rest of the R1 kids suffer with tyre wear at the end of all three races but the teams are not 100 per cent certain why. Lowes believes it might be down to cooler track temperatures.

I have got a lot of confidence and hopefully we can race to the end without having to worry about tyre life like we did at Aragon. It affected all four of the Yamahas and we still don’t really know why.

“The conditions were cooler than we have had there in the past, and it will be the same this weekend, so we have to make sure we get the work done on Friday."

Lowes wants to make one more step forward with the R1 and then he thinks he will have something with which to challenge for the rest of the season.

It’s a lot more enjoyable when you’re in the fight. We've been able to fight with Jonathan for three rounds this year but we need to keep it up, and I believe we can do this year.

"Now, more than ever with increasing electronics, you have to have the bike to be there and keep making steps forward. It's good to see the hard work paying off and I think we need one more step and I will be happy."
