Departing South African Darryn Binder has the dubious honour of topping the 2022 MotoGP crash stats with a whopping 27 falls over the season.
The former Yamaha man, who is moving down to Moto2 next season, beat fellow rookie Marco Bezzecchi by four spills while Pol Espargaro - who really ought to know better - ended in third on 21.
Espargaro went one better than his 2021 total while fellow Honda man Alex Marquez amassed an equal number. Enea Bastiani - in his second year - crashed 18 times as did Marc Marquez but the former champion missed seven races in the season, so in percentage terms he is the winner.
At the other end of the scale, Maverick Vinales only lobbed it twice so was the least crash-happy of the regular runners.
But there is a school of thought which says if you don’t fall off now and again, you’re not trying hard enough.
Yamaha test rider Cal Crutchlow managed six offs, one more than his last full season which points to how hard he was trying when he wasn’t meant to be.
In Moto2, the clear winner was Kenmith Kubo with 25, three more than Nico Antonelli with Aron Canet third and Jake Dixon fourth. Sam Lowes was well down the order with 16, one less than last year but he did miss the last few rounds with injury.
Moto3 saw Elia Bartolini take top honours with 22 while John McPhee’s swansong season saw seven swan dives.
In terms of tracks, Portimao proved to be the most sketchy with 105 crashes. Le Mans was next with 87 while Misano put on 71.
Overall, there were 1106 crashes. In 2021, it was 950 and in 2020 722.
