Cadwell BSB: Truelove snatches BSS win after Kennedy mistake

Harry Truelove has secured his first Quattro British Supersport win of the season after capitalising on a rare error by series leader Jack Kennedy during the opening race at Cadwell Park.

The Appleyard Macadam Yamaha rider looked destined to settle for second behind Kennedy’s Mar-Train R6 after the Irishman recovered from a poor start to reel Truelove in and overtake him for the lead.

However, when an off on lap 10 of 12 sent Kennedy across the grass and down to fourth position, Truelove regained a lead he’d hold comfortably over the remaining two laps.

Indeed, Kennedy’s mistake notwithstanding, it was a deserved victory for Truelove after leading for much of the race having grabbed the holeshot from second on the grid to storm into a healthy lead on lap one as rivals squabbled behind.

Kennedy - who came into the weekend with a huge series lead having won 10 of the season’s 12 races thus far - fared less well off the line, the Mar-Train Yamaha man being shuffled down to fourth behind GP2 rider Jack Scott and Appleyard’s Bradley Perie.

However, after dispatching Perie and then Scott by the end of lap two, Kennedy got his head down to chase Truelove, now almost two seconds up the road.

Despite the margin, Kennedy was right back on Truelove’s tail by the start of the fifth lap and while his first attempt to overtake at Park next time around was met with a stern rebuff at the following Chris Curve, a second strike on lap eight proved successful.

To his credit, Truelove didn’t let Kennedy get away and the pressure ultimately told on lap ten when Kennedy took to the grass to allow his rival back through and on to a popular win.

Despite dropping to fourth with his off-road excursion, Kennedy hustled his way back past both Perie and Scott on the final lap to recover second place to limit the damage to what remains a vast 111 point lead over now Truelove, who in turn has leapfrogged Perie for second in the standings.

Following on from finishing first-on-the-road at Thruxton - even if he only scores points for the British GP2 Championship standings - Scott was on the podium again in third having found a way back past Perie in the closing stages.

Eugene McManus followed up in a distant fifth place, some 16secs back from the lead, with Luke Stapleford and Ash Barnes coming home in sixth and seventh.

Leading Ducati rider Luke Jones, Jamie Perrin and Damon Rees completed the top ten, the trio helped by late falls for Triumph’s Rhys Irwin, Scott Swann and Jamie van Sikkelerus.
