Donington GP BSB: Skinner crowned 2020 British Supersport Champion

Rory Skinner took his eighth win of the season to clinch the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship at Donington Park on Sunday, the Tysers Yamaha rider coming home ahead of team-mate Brad Jones and Lee Johnston (Ashcourt Racing Yamaha).

Skinner’s dominant form in the ten races so far has seen him clinch the title with two races to spare, his lead over Saturday’s race winner James Westmoreland an unassailable 77 points.

The Gearlink Kawasaki rider led into the first corner but Skinner soon took over and he led team-mate Jones by a second at the completion of the first lap, the usual suspects of Johnston and Ben Currie (Gearlink Kawasaki) close behind. Bradley Perie wasn’t there though and the Diamond H Racing Yamaha rider was an early retirement.

The gap between the two Yamaha riders remained the same but by lap three Johnston was up into third ahead of Currie and Westmoreland with Richard Kerr going well in sixth on the Campbell Motorsport Triumph..

A lap later, and aided by the fastest lap of the race, Johnston had moved up to the back wheel of Jones whilst Charlie Nesbitt was the lead GP2 Cup rider in seventh, eager to make up for his first lap crash on Saturday.

Skinner’s lead came down to half a second on lap five with Jones lapping three tenths of a second quicker and approaching half distance the duo were together on track, Johnston only half a second further back.

Jones took over the lead on lap seven but Skinner responded immediately and was back at the head of the field on the eighth lap, Johnston still keeping a watching brief in third.

By lap ten, only half a second covered the trio as Jones re-took the lead only for Skinner to get his nose back in front a lap later, the Scot clearly keen to clinch the title with a win.

And that’s what he duly did with a new fastest lap helping him to a two second victory over Jones as Johnston took third.

Westmoreland got the better of Harry Truelove (Truelove Brothers Racing Yamaha) for fourth with Nesbitt taking sixth on the ABM Quattro and maximum points in the GP2 Cup class.

Rob Hartog (Bike Devil MV Agusta), Kerr and Jack Scott (JJ Racing Harris) completed the top ten with the latter back in the lead of the GP2 Cup standings.
