James Westmoreland took his first Quattro British Supersport Championship win of the season at Donington Park on Saturday, the Gearlink Kawasaki rider mastering the torrential rain to come home 18.9s clear of James Rose (Ibbertson Motorsport Kawasaki) with Lee Johnston crashing out of second on the final lap.

It was a disaster though for Championship leader Rory Skinner as he crashed out of the lead which means he’ll have to wait until tomorrow’s race, at least, to clinch the title.
 
It was the Tysers Yamaha rider who grabbed the lead off the line but there was immediate drama on the first lap as Charlie Nesbitt (ABM Quattro) and Tom Toparis (Benro Racing Yamaha) crashed at Hollywood and McLeans respectively.
 
Skinner led Ben Currie on the second Gearlink Kawasaki by 3.6s at the end of the opening lap with Johnston (Ashcourt Racing Yamaha) slotting into third ahead of Brad Jones (Tysers Yamaha) and Westmoreland.
 
Second time around saw Currie crash on the brakes into Foggy’s with Skinner’s lead remaining the same as Johnston and Westmoreland moved up to second and third.
 
However, just two laps later Skinner crashed at the Old Hairpin promoting Johnston into the lead, the gap to Westmoreland 1.3s as Gary Johnson, having a one-off outing in the series, moved up to third on his Pepsi-liveried Triumph.
 
Rose, who started from the back of the grid, was storming through the pack and relegated Johnson to fourth on lap five and two laps later Jones went down on the way into Coppice meaning Skinner’s lead in the championship would remain at 73 points.
 
Lap seven also saw Westmoreland take the lead from Johnston under braking into the Melbourne Loop with the Northern Irishman remaining glued to his back wheel.
 
Johnson crashed out of fourth on lap nine and then there was heartbreak for Johnston as he crashed at Coppice on the final lap.
 
Apart from a slight moment on the exit of McLeans, Westmoreland never put a foot wrong and duly came home for the win with Rose an excellent second and Cameron Horsman in a superb third, the Nova Go Racing rider the first of the GP2 Cup riders past the chequered flag.
 
Bradley Perie (Diamond H Racing Yamaha) took fourth overall, to complete the Supersport podium, with GP2 Cup riders Tom Oliver, on the second Nova Go Racing machine, and Dan Jones (Lloyd & Jones FTR) next to finish.
 
Rob Hartog (Bike Devil MV Agusta), Alastair Seeley (ABM Quattro), Richard Kerr (Campbell Motor Sport Triumph) and Mason Law (Spirit Moto) completed the top ten.
 
Law picked up 11 points which saw him regain the lead in the GP2 Cup series by just one point from Jack Scott (JJ Racing Harris).
