Double races for MotoE in 2022 shake-up

MotoE will see two races and a new qualifying format for 2022 after the MotoE Grand Prix Commission confirmed a shake-up to the current Eco World Cup format.

Starting from next season, standard MotoE events will feature two free practice sessions followed by qualifying, all on Friday, and two races - one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. Each race will normally be scheduled after the Grand Prix classes.

E-pole will be replaced by the more traditional qualifying schedule of the GP paddock, with 10 minute Q1 and Q2 sessions. Much like MotoGP, Q1 will comprise the slowest ten riders from the combined results of FP1 and FP2. The two fastest riders will progress - having been permitted to recharge their machine in pit lane - and will receive an additional rear tyre.
Q2 will comprise the fastest eight riders from the combined results of FP1 and FP2 plus the fastest two riders from Q1.

The 2021 MotoE World Cup was clinched on Sunday by Pons Racing’s Jordi Torres, for the second time in succession, after a dramatic final weekend for the Spaniard. Torres secured a victory in Saturday’s  race with a final corner move, only for the deciding battle to prove even more chaotic. Dicing with Dominique Aegerter out front for the duration, contact saw the title leader down with three corners to go, remounting to finish 13th at the flag. A late decision to penalise his race-winning rival, dropped Aegerter to 12th - after a 38-second rider through penalty was issued - with the points deficit gifting Torres the crown for the second time in a row.
