Jerez Moto2 test: Binder edges Lowes to top spot

Britain’s Sam Lowes lost out to Red Bull Ajo KTM’s Brad Binder by less than one one-hundredth of a second on the combined, three-day Jerez Moto2 test timesheet.

The pair’s one-lap pace at the Spanish circuit was blistering with both Binder and Lowes doing 1’40.98s laps which is a tenth slower than Valentino Rossi’s 2004 pole lap on the 990cc Yamaha YZR-M1.

Binder’s best of 1’40.982, using a KTM chassis, was set in this morning’s first session while Lowes, whose Federal Oils Gresini team have Kalex, was 0.007s slower in the lunchtime outing.

Lowes’ 2018 team-mate Iker Lecuona, riding for Team America (fuck, yeah) KTM, was third and a tenth further back, setting his time in the same session as his ex-stablemate.

Lorenzo Baldassarri took his Kalex to fourth place while Luca Marini stuck his Sky VR46 Kalex in fifth place overall, 0.173s off the pace.

Britain’s Jake Dixon rounded off his test in 23rd place on the Nieto KTM but was only a little over a second off the pace.

The man in seventh made some headlines of his own just behind Alex Marquez, with Nicolo Bulega (Sky VR46) the fastest rookie by a tenth at the end of day three.

Jorge Martin (Red Bull KTM Ajo) was the debutant just that tiny fraction behind him, although the reigning Champion was ninth overall and the two rookies were split by Australian Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG). Marcel Schötter (Dynavolt Intact) completed the top ten.
