Jerez WorldSBK test: Lowes ready to confirm pace in Portugal

Pata Yamaha's Alex Lowes slotted into second place in the overall WorldSBK test rankings at Jerez de la Frontera, setting more laps than any of the other top competitors and proving to be a model of consistency.

He finished strong and although he used a qualifier to go second, ahead of Haslam who did not, Lowes was content.

“The final day was a good day,” said Lowes. “Obviously my best lap time was with a qualifying tyre, but I also did a 1’39.8 with a race tyre. So, not that much different.

"I did not try any of the new tyres that they brought for maybe six or ten laps, but I think a lot of the other guys did. I think my pace was quite strong.”

Looking forward to the next tests at Portimao, Lowes said, “This is only testing but honestly I feel quite good. I just did one lap on the qualifying tyre and did not push too hard, so it was quite nice really. I was probably faster than I expected to be and my consistent pace was, compared to the others, better than I expected. No mistakes, more laps than anybody else, I am quite satisfied.”

In terms of the work done at the test itself, Lowes apparently tried several items and setting changes, some good, some less so.

“We confirmed some of the improvements from yesterday today and they still felt quite good so it was positive,” said the Englishman. “We had some big changes in the afternoon. Some were not very good, worse, but a couple of things felt better. The tough thing was obviously with the track.

"I tried a race simulation, but after about 12 laps the front tyre was quite destroyed, but I do not think anybody else tried to do a long run. At least it was good information for the guys and a good practice for me before the season starts.

"There are three or four things, some on the front and some on the rear I felt good with at this test, which I need to try and confirm in Portugal. If I have the same feelings there I will be quite happy. So that is what we need to try and achieve.”

For Portimao there may not be as many new things for Lowes to work with. “We tried everything on the programme here but we almost have to do the same again in Portimao, because the track is so different. So we have to confirm these settings there.”
