Aruba Ducati’s Chaz Davies took his first WorldSBK win on the Panigale VR and his first since Aragon in 2018 at Laguna Seca this afternoon, sweeping past Jonathan Rea on lap one and never looking back.
But it was disaster again for team-mate Alvaro Bautista who retired after only a handful of laps and he could do nothing but watch his title hopes get shot to fuck as Rea took 20 points for second place and increase his lead to 81.
Bautista separated his left shoulder in a sprint race crash and had to be assessed for fitness ahead of forming up on the grid. The Spaniard indicated in the garage his injury was the reason for pulling in but he now has an eight-week break to get fit.
Puccetti Kawasaki’s Toprak Razgatlioglu claimed another podium position ahead of Alex Lowes on the Yamaha who had to clear Tom Sykes to claim a decent points haul. Team-mate Michael van der Mark retired on lap four. As a result, Lowes moves into championship third place with a five-point advantage over the Dutchman.
Sykes held on using the SCX rear tyre for fifth, with Leon Haslam (Kawasaki Racing Team) in sixth.
Loris Baz (Ten KateYamaha) finished seventh with Jordi Torres (Team Pedercini Racing Kawasaki) another pleasing eighth.
Marco Melandri (GRT Yamaha) closed in on the back of that fight to finish ninth after starting down in 17th place.
The top ten was rounded out by Laguna rookie, Michael Rinaldi (Barni Racing Team Ducati). JD Beach (Attack Performance Estenson Yamaha) was 16th and just missed a championship point after getting passed by Ryuichi Kiyonari on the past lap.
