Misano WorldSBK: Rinaldi doubles up with sprint race win

Aruba Ducati’s Michael Rinaldi made it two WorldSBK wins from two races at Misano this morning when he scrapped his way to the Superpole race win.

Rinaldi had to pass six-time champion Jonathan Rea and Toprak Razgatlioglu before crossing the line with a half-second lead over the Yamaha man. Rinaldi’s 1’34.356 lap on the second circuit was a new lap record.

Once again, in a repeat of the first day’s top five results, Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was fourth and Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team) fifth.

The Sunday morning joy for the locals was enhanced by a sixth place for privateer Axel Bassani (MotoCorsa Racing Ducati) who was 7.448 seconds from his countryman Rinaldi after ten laps, in track conditions that had already hit 30°C by 11am.

Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was seventh, Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha) eighth and Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team) ninth. Those top nine finishing positions will the starting places for the final 21-lap Race Two this afternoon.

Tenth this morning was the top Honda rider, Alvaro Bautista (HRC Honda).

Eugene Laverty (RC Squadra Corse BMW), who had a huge crash on Saturday in practice, was declared fit today and finished a more than creditable 13th in the Superpole race. Chaz Davies (Team GoEleven Ducati) crashed out while Leon Haslam (HRC Honda) was 11th.
