MotoGP Aragon: Tyre management works for Iannone

Andrea Iannone has said he successfully managed his soft rear during this afternoon’s 23-lap Aragon MotoGP and was able to bag a podium in Spain.

The Italian got the better of his teammate and was right on the cusp of fighting for victory. Unfortunately for him, the power of Marquez and Dovizioso’s respective Honda and Ducati’s was too much for him and his factory Suzuki.

“I think it’s a very good race for us; in any case it’s a really good battle,” said ‘the Maniac’

“First of all I fight a lot with my tyres, especially with the rear tyre. It’s really important to manage for the race. During the practice we were working in a good direction, working a lot with the electronics. Then me too with the throttle for the race, I tried to not push a lot and I think this is a really good strategy.

“From the beginning, Marc and Dovi have a great pace but fortunately to remain really close I didn’t need to push 100%, I remained very close. Then Alex over takes me and he pushed and I lose a little bit from Dovi, Marc and Alex.

“But in any case I remained calm and tried to manage the tyre situation and at the end, the last 5/6 laps I started to recover a little bit the gap and I think it’s a really good strategy. It was a really good battle, especially on corner 15, but in any case, when I pick up the bike, the Honda and the Ducati are very fast, faster than us on the straight. I think this is the negative point for the race for today, but in any case it is a good race.”

Iannone, much like race winner Marc Marquez, decided to run soft tyres in todays race. Iannone said that he had been working on it all weekend and the success is from hard work done over the weekend.

“We worked a lot on the set up, but I was excited to use the soft one because the soft one for us this weekend is a bit better in the dry,” he said.

“When we pick up the bike with the hard one we lose something, we have more spin. We improved in the acceleration with the soft one and we focused on using this one. I worked more or less the whole weekend with these tyres for the distance and it was really good.”
