MotoGP Aragon: Vinales cuts gap to crashing Marquez

Monster Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales put a small dent in the massive lead Marc Marquez established over the MotoGP pack at Aragon, cutting the gap to 1.1s as the Repsol Honda man crashed at turn eight in the afternoon session.

Marquez lost the front at the mini-Corkscrew while on a soft-tyre race run and, after getting back to the garages, went back out on a used hard rear Michelin as his 1’46.865 was never in any danger.

Vinales put in a 1’48.014 to claim second on the overall sheets and he was chased hard by two of the three other M1 riders as the minutes of free practice two ticked down despite a huge top speed deficit (see below).

Valentino Rossi clawed his way up to third place with his penultimate lap, setting a 1’48.071 to trail his team-mate by just 0.057s.

French wunderkind Fabio Quartararo put his Petronas Yamaha in fourth with a lap only 0.048s slower than Rossi.

Pol Espargaro proved his Misano pace was no fluke, grabbing fifth on the Red Bull KTM with a 1’48.392 using a hard front with his soft rear.

Jack Miller and Cal Crutchlow were locked together in sixth and seventh. The Pramac Ducati man had softs all round for his 1’48.442 which was enough to fend off the LCR Honda man who finished 0.008s in arrears.

It was another tough session for Andrea Dovizioso whose fastest lap was enough for eighth but still 1.6s off the pace.

Joan Mir was the quickest of the Suzukis, grabbing an automatic qualifying two place in ninth with Aleix Espargaro’s final lap claiming place number ten - an important lap as thunderstorms are forecast for FP3.

Alex Rins and Danilo Petrucci missed out on the top ten by a gnat’s with Taka Nakagami, Franco Morbidelli and Andrea Iannone completing the top 15.

KTM test rider Mika Kallio finished in 17th with Bradley Smith in 23rd.
