MotoGP Assen: Aegerter takes MotoE victory after final lap battle

Dynavolt Intact GP’s Dominique Aegerter claimed victory at the Assen TT Circuit on Saturday after a dramatic last lap battle for the MotoE podium.

LCR’s Eric Granado and Pons Racing’s Mattia Casadei completed the celebrations with eight-hundredths of a second covering the trio across the line.

The electric action saw Gresini’s Matteo Ferrari take the holeshot from Aegerter with Granado in third as the opening lap fired up. Miquel Pons trailing his LCR teammate with Casadei quickly on the move, bettering Marc Alcoba for the top five before he took Pons for fourth.

Hector Garzo lead the GRT RNF duo of Niccolo Canepa and Bradley Smith as the second lap began. Alcoba threatening Pons for fifth before the LCR rider held the line.

Casadei claimed the fastest lap of the race so far as he continued to circulate in fourth but with his sights firmly set on the podium places ahead. Smith dispatching his teammate for eighth on the back of the leading group as the Oxfordshire man got his first taste of racing after three months of injury rehabilitation.

Granado was through on Aegerter for second with five laps to go, as the Swiss rider suffered a moment from third. Alcoba and Canepa receiving track limits warnings as the race hit half distance.

The Brazilian was in the lead as the fourth lap completed, with Casadei through on the Dynavolt Intact for third. The pair continuing to battle with the Italian quickly dispatched as out front Ferrari attempted his own return to the lead. Pons was the next to strike on Casadei as Aegerter stormed to second. Ferrari out of the seat and down to fifth as Alcoba collected fourth in the drama.

Two to go and Aegerter was reeling in Granado for the leading battle before the reigning WorldSSP Champion took charge. The Swiss rider running wide as Casadei capitalised and Granado returned to second. Canepa hitting back on his British teammate in the fight for eighth with Jordi Torres narrowly behind the bickering pair.

Aegerter briefly struck for the lead before Casadei returned to the front after a moment for the Intact GP. The determined number 77 far from done as he swept through the final chicane to take the victory from Granado with Casadei dropped to third as the trio crossed the line. Alcoba crashing out at turn 15 to give Ferrari fourth from Garzo, Pons, Canepa and Smith.

Torres crossed the line ninth from Kevins Zannoni and Manfredi with Xavi Fores completing the top 12 on the back of his Octo Pramac teammate. Hikari Okubo claimed 13th on his return from injury with Alex Escrig, Maria Herrera, Alessio Finello and Unai Oradre completing the finishers.
