MotoGP Austin: Antonelli masters tricky conditions for pole

SIC 58 Squadra Corse rider Nico Antonelli mastered the drying conditions around the Circuit of the Americas to take his first pole since Qatar 2018 by over half a second.

With the morning storms moving north and blue skies appearing over heard, the Moto3 riders went onto a damp track, searching for grip and after seeing Darryn Binder dominate Q1, those extra fifteen minutes on track made the South African favourite to take the pole position.

Binder was fastest early on, but as the riders who didn’t get the luxury of Q1, got up to speed and the track started to ever so slightly dry, it was Antonelli who improved the most, eventually taking the pole position by 0.501 seconds from Q1 graduate Augusto Fernandez.

Gabi Rodrigo will join Antonelli and Fernandez on the front row of the grid with his late lap just putting him in front of Argentine Moto3 winner Jaume Masia.

Binder couldn’t improve further, meaning he will start from the middle of the second row in fifth position with Aron Canet shaking off a late fall to start sixth.

Tatsuki Suzuki will head the third row in seventh position and the Japanese rider will be joined on the third row by John McPhee and Alonso Lopez, who will start in eighth and ninth respectively.

Leopard duo Marcos Ramirez and Lorenzo Dalla Porta will be joined by Romano Fenati on the fourth row of the grid, with Andrea Migno, Dennis Foggia and Jakub Kornfiel rounding out the front five rows.
