MotoGP Austin: FP3 cancelled due to lightning storms

MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3’s Saturday morning free practice three sessions has been cancelled due to inclement weather around the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

With early morning rain, track conditions weren’t deemed safe for riders to venture out on time this morning. Lightning strikes nearby forbid organisers from giving the session a fixed start time, with local laws not allowing marshals out on track if a lightning strike has been recorded nearby.

When the first storm passed, a start time of 11am local time was provisionally given for Moto3 free practice to start a shortened 20-minute session. However, minutes before the start of the session, a second storm came over the circuit, forcing all three free practice three sessions to be abandoned.

With free practice three cancelled for all three classes, the qualifying two times will be determined by the Friday times.

There was no concrete start time for Moto3 Q1 with organisers waiting for weather to clear before giving a time. Local weather radars suggest this afternoon shouldn’t be too badly affected by the weather with morning storms passing by.
