MotoGP Austin: Schrotter builds to Moto2 pole

Marcel Schrotter built up to his second pole position of the season in a patient but masterful qualifying performance around the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

The German was fastest after the opening day, getting himself to the top of the timing sheets on Friday by building up and going faster and faster in a run, and the Dynavolt man followed the same strategy in the fifteen minute qualifying session.

Schrotter, riding around with his team-mate Tom Luthi, went on a run, before posting his fastest lap, a 2:10.875 on his last flying lap, which was good enough to secure the pole position by 0.058 seconds faster than a last second lap from Alex Marquez.

It’s Schrotter’s second pole position of his career and the second of his season, following on his pole at the season opener in Qatar.

Marquez was second after a long run, with Sam Lowes joining Schrotter and Marquez on the front row, with the Brit securing third position.

Luthi will start from fourth position on his Dynavolt bike, ahead of Brad Binder and Jorge Navarro. The stand-in Mattia Pasini will head the third row of the grid in seventh position on his first race on the Triumph.

Q1’s fastest man Jorge Martin will start from eighth on his Red Bull KTM with Simone Corsi rounding out the top three rows in ninth. Luca Marini will start from tenth position on his Team Sky VR46 bike and will be joined on the fourth row by fellow Italian’s Andrea Locatelli and Marco Bezzecchi.

It was a session to forget for Moto2 World  Championship leader Lorenzo Baldassarri. The Italian who has won the opening two races could only manage fifteenth position.
