MotoGP Austria: Dovizioso heads Marquez in opening practice

Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso set the pace in this morning's first MotoGP free practice at the Red Bull Ring, using soft Michelins all round to demote reigning champion Marc Marquez with his last lap.

Marquez, who stuck to his usual plan of an early race simulation, kept in one set of medium tyres for the session and held top spot with 1'24.218 until the final minute when Dovizioso beat him by a little less than two tenths.

Monster Yamaha's Maverick Vinales, also on medium Michelins, ended the first session in third place and only 0.062s further back.

Jack Miller bucked the trend and put in a new hard rear on the Pramac Ducati for his last run and still lapped at 1'24.360 for fourth place, just in front of nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi.

Fabio Quartararo, who has elected to use the Ohlins carbon forks after testing them at Brno on Monday, had been in the top five until he was pushed into sixth by The Doctor but the rookie was still less than half a second off the pace.

Alex Rins bagged seventh with Johann Zarco putting in a surprise top-ten appearance in eighth place. Taka Nakagami was second Honda rider in ninth with Miguel Oliveira enjoying the carbon swingarm in his satellite KTM for tenth.

Cal Crutchlow finished in 11th with Aleix Espargaro, Pecco Bagnaia, Danilo Petrucci and Pol Espargaro completing the top 15.
