Almost was the word of the day for GasGas Aspar’s Jake Dixon after the British rider missed out on a Moto2 podium in Barcelona.

Just a tenth denied Dixon after Augusto Fernandez swept through in the final corners to clinch the celebrations. The 26-year-old having remained in podium contention for almost the entirety of the 22-lap race.

A stunning weekend had seen Dixon stake his claim against the front runners with a fourth in qualifying backing up his front row potential from the free practice sessions.

Maintaining the podium-worthy pace on race day, the Aspar rider spent a brief spell in the lead after Joe Roberts crashed out, before running narrowly behind Aron Canet until the closing stages. The pair being demoted by championship leader Celestino Vietti for outright glory with the KTM rider later denying him third position in the final seconds.

“Annoying to be at the front the whole race and then to lose a podium on the last lap!” Dixon admitted after the flag. “Anyway, I gave everything today.

“We know where we need to improve. We finished 0.6 from first and now we need to get our heads down for Sachsenring and do better and be stronger next time.”
